Anticipation reaching fever point
Anticipation for tonight’s Parliamentary session is reaching fever point as Malta’s traditional political divide starts to closely emerge from the shadows as expectations and speculation got the best out of people today.
Many workers were noticed discussing possible scenarios following the Budget vote that is expected to be taken in Parliament after the Prime Minister addresses the House.
A decisive factor remains PN MP Franco Debono who remains adamant at voting against the government’s budget, thus technically bringing his government down. Should this occur, the Prime Minister is bound to advise the President of the Republic on the dissolution of Parliament and the date of a general election.
The date being mentioned most remains March 9, 2013. Should that be the date of the next election, it would be five years after the last general election was held on March 8, 2008.
Dr Debono is expected to address Parliament before a vote is taken and many are anticipating that he will explain his motives for voting against the budget. Should Dr Debono abstain, the budget could be approved with the casting vote of the Speaker.
If the budget is approved, a marathon schedule of budget estimates for each Ministry will start tomorrow.
Nevertheless, the anticipation will remain until the session starts in Parliament which many are expected to follow on radio.
