Following the excellent performances by HiTT Academy players in the Junior National Championships, the Seniors National Championships presented a great opportunity for HiTT Academy to cement its status as the top table tennis school in Malta. Once again, HiTT players delivered with some excellent results.

The most prestigious event, the Men’s Singles, was won by HiTT player and assistant coach Andrew Gambina. Andrew played confidently throughout the tournament, brushing aside several of the top ten ranked opponents on his way to the final game, including the current no.1 ranked player in the semi-final with a masterful 4-2 victory. In the final against Daniel Bajada, last year’s national champion, Andrew won the first set 11-9 to gain control of the match. From that point onwards he was always in command rushing to a 3-1 lead. Bajada made an impressive comeback to win the 5th set and bring the score to 3-2, however Andrew kept his cool and closed the match in the next set to become National Champion for the first time in his table tennis career. Head Coach Mario Genovese also managed to reach the semi-final losing an exciting match to Daniel Bajada, and Isaac Grixti kept up his recent great performances finishing second in the plate event with a close 3-2 loss to Ray Darmanin.

HiTT Academy players also did well in the other events. Therese Genovese impressed in the Ladies’ event with a second place finish, and also teamed up with her father Mario Genovese to place second in the Mixed Doubles event, winning their match against eventual winners Edward Baldacchino and Dorianne Magri 4-2 in the process. Mario Genovese also triumphed in the Veterans’ event to complete an amazing tournament for HiTT Academy.

In the summer months, HiTT Academy is continuing to build on its positive work with three months of intensive physical, technical and mental training. The summer school has already started with training sessions being held at St Albert School in Valletta with Serbian coach Milos Savic coaching at the Academy during the summer. The club has various training sessions to choose from for all players aged 6 and over. This summer the Academy has also launched a new initiative opening a session for adult players who would like to socialise and learn table tennis under the guidance of HiTT expert coaches. Further details about table tennis training can be obtained via www.hittmalta.com or on facebook.
